In 1973 Astrid Fuller, a long-time resident of Hyde Park and one of the early Chicago muralists, created Spirit of Hyde Park. The 200-foot mural is located on 57th Street between Lake Park and Stony Island. This historic Hyde Park mural depicts episodes in the history of Hyde Park over the previous 100 years. In explaining the creation of the mural, Fuller explained: “I showed how the community was very active in many of the issues that confronted the rest of the nation. […] In the end, I put in an ideal Hyde Park, what it was striving for with the old helping the young, with the Black and White people mixing together freely and children playing.”
In 2010 Bernard Williams completed a re-interpretive restoration of the Spirit of Hyde Park. Williams worked with Astrid Fuller to identify sections of the original mural for integration into a new mural design that will carry the same name: Spirit of Hyde Park. Williams brought his design skills to bear on new research and understanding of the historic and evolving sense of Hyde Park.
