Knowledge is Power, created by Amanda Murdovich, is the third piece of permanent public art created at Harlan Community Academy. In the winter of 2018, Murdovich and students at the academy began to brainstorm ideas for a new mural, combining reference materials, ideas from the surrounding environment including patterns found in classrooms and on clothing, and collaborating in a design/sketching session focusing on visual storytelling. The result of these efforts is a 40-square-foot mural of broken tile mosaic and acrylic paint on the theme “knowledge is power.”
The mural is composed of three figures representing the student body. The collective student body is holding an open book, symbolizing their dedication to learning, and a tree growing from the book illustrates growth and strength. Also included are images of apples and a lightbulb, as well as the Chicago skyline.
