Another Time’s Voice Remembers my Passion’s Humanity

Together, artists Mitchell Caton and Calvin Jones created six murals on the South and West Sides of Chicago, including Another Time’s Voice Remembers My Passion’s Humanity, which was created in 1979 in Bronzeville. The 16 x 33-foot mural combines Caton’s movement-filled depictions with Jones’s contemporary portraiture. On the left, the mural depicts a wall-high African mask and the face of a contemporary woman, thus linking the African past with the present community. On the right, the striding figure of an elderly woman honors the strength of the black matriarchy.

The mural was originally painted with oil paint on masonry and restored in 1993 with acrylic paint. In 2018 it was restored a second time by Bernard Williams.
